What do you like best about SMSP?

‘It’s really friendly.’

‘I love the fun lessons and our teachers are great.’

‘The teachers know you well and treat you as individuals.’

‘We like the topics we learn, especially in Art, Maths and English.’

‘I like playing with the play equipment with my friends at break time.’

‘I like using our library. We have lots of good books to enjoy reading.’

Who would you speak to if you were worried in school?

‘We would speak to our teacher.’

‘I would talk to one of the safeguarding team like Mrs Bateman.’

‘We would talk to a trusted adult at school or talk to one of my friends.’

Who is the designated safeguarding lead?

‘Mrs Bateman is the designated safeguarding lead.’

‘Reverand Mary is a safeguarding governor. All the safeguarding leads are on the posters up around school.’

Why do teachers stand at the gate when you arrive and go home?

‘They stop people coming into school who shouldn’t and also people on bikes or with dogs.’

‘They are there for the safety of the pupils, to check who you are leaving with and arriving with.’

‘They are there to welcome you in the morning and to say hello.’

‘They are there to welcome you into school and make sure you get into school safely.’

How does the school encourage you to look after your emotional and mental health?

‘We have clubs like the Lighthouse club which was run by Insight – from St Michael’s church.’

‘We take part in days through the year like ‘hello yellow day’ and ‘mental awareness week’ where we stop to think about our mental health and wellbeing.’

‘We have workshops and assemblies through the year which give us strategies to use to keep a healthy body and mind.’

‘We have been learning to show our emotions and how important it is to do this. We use Zones of Regulation. We learn about when we are in red, yellow and blue zones and how to deal with this.’

‘We enjoy our PSHE lessons that teach us a lot about health and wellbeing.’

‘We have ‘brain buddies’ sessions to help us work through our emotions.’

‘We learn about positive mental wellbeing and what this means for us.’

 ‘We have calm time where we shut our eyes and focus on our breathing.’

Can you tell us anything about how the school encourages you to respect people from other backgrounds and treat everyone equally?

‘We are encouraged to be polite and respectful to people of all religions and backgrounds.’

‘I came from another country and had a welcome buddy which made me feel included.’

‘I was recently new to the school and I have been made to feel really welcome.’

‘I had a TA speak and work with me in my home language, to help me when I arrived.’
